Located at the northwestern corner of Haidian Park in Beijing, the Sanshan Wuyuan Cultural Arts Center was built on the former site of the West Garden of Changchun Garden. It serves as a vital venue for preserving and presenting the history and culture of the Three Hills and Five Gardens.
The Center is dedicated to the conservation, research, interpretation, and exhibition of the cultural heritage of the Three Hills and Five Gardens as well as the Haidian District. It is a large-scale, modern public cultural facility that integrates heritage preservation, cultural exchange, and natural landscape. Its goal is to become a hub for the research, exhibition, education, and exchange of fine traditional Chinese culture, with the Three Hills and Five Gardens as its core focus.
The Center features 4,000 square meters of space for artifact storage, research, and conservation, and houses six exhibition halls, including a permanent exhibition gallery and several temporary exhibition spaces.
The architectural style of the Center blends classical charm with contemporary design. Its composition weaves together straight and curved lines, creating a well-balanced and dynamic spatial layout. The exterior adopts a Neo-Chinese design, featuring overhanging gabled roofs and façades clad in fair-faced concrete panels, achieving a refined balance between simplicity and vitality. Designed by Zhang Li, Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, it represents a contemporary expression of the courtyard layout found in northern Chinese gardens.
